St Patricks day football

St Patricks day football

Here is a little animation made for Saint Patricks day. It's a little cartoon fella celebrating Ray Houghtons winner against England in the Euro 88' championships. This was the tournament that really kickstarted the golden era of Irish football.

The animation was made using Adobe Character Animator, and is a quick test to learn the software. It is surprisingly easy to use. You create a character in Photoshop or Illustrator, and place the parts you want to move separately on their own layer. The program uses motion capture and your computers camera to mirror your movements with the character. It takes a bit of time to set up, but once you have it, very easy to make a bunch of animations.

Deconstructed  character. Each element has it's own layer to animate it separately.

While researching Ray Houghtons goal, I came across super fan Eddie O' Mahony who has managed to collect every Irish Jersey ever made. Super effort, and interesting how the collection also tells the story of the national team.

Been a while since Ireland have been at a world cup - here's hoping 2022 will see a new Irish world cup jersey, and new Ray Houghton goal like memories!
